The VSNZ Winter Festival brings together electronic music and iconic nature. Three stages set in the heart of the Swiss Alps and surrounded by snowy peaks and dancing crowds offer a captivating fusion of sound and landscape. This is a festival that blends sound, atmosphere and community at lofty heights to create an unforgettable experience.
The vision behind the festival was clear: to bring electronic music to a place where nature, altitude and freedom open up new dimensions. With events in spectacular mountain settings, a niche has been created, moving away from the classic open-air festival in the lowlands towards an experience where the surroundings and music exist in perfect harmony. In recent years, the festival has grown steadily, professionalised its infrastructure, and cultivated a loyal community. With each edition, a deeper connection has emerged between nature, music, and the festival community.
The focus is on electronic music, ranging from driving techno and deep house to atmospheric, melodic sounds. Artists such as Stephan Bodzin deliver intense live sets that create a dense, emotional soundscape with analogue synthesizers, usually characterised by passion and musical sophistication. The international and diverse line-up includes artists such as Brina Knauss, Âme, Colyn and Mind Against, which demonstrates the festival’s openness to the various facets of electronic music.
The festival’s sound is like walking between Alpine walls: raw, profound and liberating, with beats that pound like a heart beating to the rhythm of the mountains. There are three stages located in stunning locations around Grindelwald, including an alpine pasture and a mountain venue, as well as an indoor and outdoor space. An impressive 17-metre-high mirror tower structure forms the centrepiece of the visuals. The backdrop comprises snow-capped peaks, icy air and an alpine panorama, as well as the warming glow of light installations, reflective surfaces and dancing bodies.
When darkness falls, the Grindelwald sports centre is transformed into an indoor rave cave with light art, energy and crowd magic, providing a stark contrast to the clear mountain night while remaining in harmony with the festival’s spirit. Every detail is carefully considered: the architecture, lighting and sound are all coordinated to create the perfect atmosphere. The Alps are not just a backdrop here; they are part of the festival.
The VSNZ Winter Festival deliberately opens its stage to diversity, featuring acts such as Brina Knauss, who hail from different countries and have diverse backgrounds. This creates cultural diversity as well as sonic diversity, with women and queer artists taking centre stage in a scene that is often otherwise homogeneous.
This commitment to equality and diversity pulses beneath the snow, discreet yet palpable, and elevates the festival beyond mere entertainment, making it a statement of openness and community. A legendary moment: Stephan Bodzin’s live set was planned as a complex performance featuring analogue synthesizers. However, a broken Moog synthesiser shortly before the performance meant that it had to be improvised, resulting in a raw and unforgettable DJ set.
Another memorable experience was the after-show party on the ice rink in Grindelwald, with an indoor set in the middle of the mountain village, complete with light and sound, and vibrant energy — a transition from alpine silence to club ecstasy. Moments like these live on in our memories and in the pulse of the music.
VSNZ fosters a sense of community that transcends DJs and sound systems. Anyone who has ever danced on the mountain with friends or strangers under a starry sky and in the fresh mountain air knows that it’s not the mainstream that matters here, but the shared experience. The location becomes a catalyst for intensity and cohesion.
At the same time, the festival demonstrates how electronic music and nature can coexist in harmony, promoting environmental awareness and respect. The message it sends is that music is not just entertainment; it can also be a form of rebellion and a means of connection, as well as the backbone of a scene that celebrates diversity and creativity.
VSNZ is an internationally active yet locally rooted platform that brings together ravers, nature lovers, sound seekers and night owls. When the bass fades and the last beat echoes away, the image remains: snowflakes in the light, bodies moving in time to the music, and hearts beating in unison with the mountains. The essence of this night is an intense yet serene sense of unity.
