Since 1994, Time Warp has transported thousands of people overnight into a world of driving techno, hypnotic house and visually stunning light art — a sonic, visual and communal journey where music becomes a universal language. Thanks to its uncompromising sound, immersive aesthetics and global networking, the festival has firmly established itself within the electronic music scene.
Starting in 1994 at the Walzmühle in Ludwigshafen as a small but ambitious party with a raw underground spirit, Time Warp has grown into the global event it is today. Over the years, it has moved to various industrial and club venues in the Rhine-Neckar region. Since 2000, it has been held regularly at the Maimarkthalle in Mannheim. This gave the event a stable home and provided space for spectacular productions and constant further development. As Time Warp grew in popularity, it expanded internationally in 2005. Since then, editions have taken place in Vienna, Prague, Milan, New York, São Paulo and, most recently, Spain.
While Time Warp is primarily associated with techno, its spectrum has long since expanded to encompass house grooves and deep and minimal variants, as well as more experimental varieties of electronic music. The booking philosophy combines scene veterans with up-and-coming talents – old masters such as Sven Väth, Richie Hawtin and Carl Cox have performed, as have new, fresh names. The acoustic approach remains uncompromising: crystal-clear sound on generous, powerful systems – a festival with the character of a club.
Spanning several floors, Time Warp offers a variety of sounds, lighting designs and spatial feels, ranging from uncompromising techno to areas with house or melancholic beats. One of the most ambitious productions in the scene, it features light installations, projections, expansive lasers, architecture and sound that come together in symbiosis to fill the hall with a hypnotic, immersive atmosphere. Year after year, a unique cosmos is created in the Maimarkthalle: a temporary universe where everyday life is forgotten and music takes centre stage.
Although Time Warp has historically been strongly associated with techno legends and mainstage DJs, the concept embraces diversity by combining well-known artists with new talent. Although Time Warp was not founded specifically as a ‘female empowerment’ festival, the programme offers a platform for diversity and identity by regularly booking diverse artists, which is important in a scene that is often still homogeneous.
Over the decades, countless legendary sets have burned themselves into the collective memory of the scene. These include early nights with Sven Väth, epic marathon raves with over 18,000 guests, a completely sold-out 25^(th) anniversary in 2019 and a 30^(th) anniversary in 2024, celebrated with special editions, expanded line-ups and a multimedia exhibition. The combination of sound, space, and community — loud bodies, dancing crowds, and united pulses — forms memories and tells stories that resonate far beyond the last beat.
Time Warp is so much more than just a festival. It is a vibrant hub where people from dozens of different nations and backgrounds come together and are united by bass, light and the urge to dance. The event embodies technical excellence, artistic integrity and a sense of community, combining the intimacy of club nights with the spectacle of a festival. For Mannheim, Time Warp has become a cultural export success: it attracts music enthusiasts from far and wide over the weekend, ensures full hotel occupancy, and puts the city and the scene on the global map.
Time Warp demonstrates that electronic music — wild, raw or relaxed — is not just sound, but also space, light, community and history. Every floor is a promise and every night a manifesto. Those who immerse themselves leave not only with music in their ears, but also with memories that linger long after, having given their heartbeat a new frequency.
It is a haunting image: thousands of bodies in the dark, lasers cutting through shadows and bass vibrating through bones, with pure ecstasy pulsating in between.
