The DGTL Festival in Amsterdam: Music, light and sustainable culture!

The DGTL Festival is not just any festival; it is a global phenomenon in the world of electronic music. Since 2013, it has been based in the industrial heart of Amsterdam: the NDSM Docklands. With a programme ranging from techno and house to neo-trance and live performances, DGTL combines sound, visual art and sustainable culture to create a shared experience where music is not just heard, but felt.

DGTL was founded in 2013 on the NDSM shipyard site in Amsterdam and quickly grew beyond its local scene to become an international festival with global appeal. What began as a vision to combine electronic music with experimental art and a commitment to sustainability has evolved into a symbol of cultural innovation. Today, DGTL holds events in cities such as Santiago, Bengaluru, Lima, and Mumbai, and is one of the festivals that combines music, art, and social awareness.

DGTL’s musical DNA is multi-layered and progressive. The festival creates space for techno, house, trance, neo-electronic music, live performances and genre fusions, showcasing both well-known artists and up-and-coming talent. Recent editions have featured artists such as Honey Dijon, Brutalismus 3000, Monolink and DJ Heartstring, covering everything from pulsating club beats to emotional live sets. The addition of new stages, such as the Current Stage, reflects aesthetic and sound-culture trends in the scene, including Eurodance and trance-inspired sounds.

DGTL is both visually and acoustically intense. The former shipyard site of the NDSM Docklands provides the perfect backdrop for immersive installations, light art, and audiovisual performances. Multiple stages, such as Modular, AMP, Frequency and Filter, create different soundscapes, ranging from outdoor experiences and intimate club vibes to live performance environments. The visual identity is characterised by contemporary lighting design, VJ collaborations and architecture that emphasise the urban character of the location.

DGTL consciously promotes diversity and empowerment. Its line-ups and initiatives aim to raise the profile of female artists, non-binary DJs and producers, and to ensure gender equity on its stages. Artists such as Honey Dijon and DJ Heartstring embody musical excellence and are also voices of a scene that is increasingly demanding equality. The festival also emphasises ‘safe(r) spaces’ and an inclusive festival ethic — a cultural statement within the global electronic music community.

Over the years, DGTL has become renowned for its legendary sets and iconic moments, such as emotional live performances by Monolink and Moodymann, the introduction of new stage designs, and the debut of innovative acts and B2B sets, which have become part of festival folklore. The premiere of the Current Stage, for example, is a moment when tradition meets fresh energy, and the festival continues to write its own history.

DGTL is more than just a music event; it is a cultural statement. The community, consisting of music fans, artists, and creatives from all over the world, experiences the festival as a collective journey that extends beyond the dance floors. DGTL is renowned for its commitment to sustainability (circular practices, plant-based catering and avoidance of single-use plastics), setting significant trends for ecological responsibility within the festival landscape.
